Planning Kashmir from Kohima? Start here

The short version for Kohima: a multi-step journey, so plan 7–8 nights.

With a multi-step journey from Kohima, 7–8 nights is the realistic minimum for a relaxed trip; shorter plans spend too much of the holiday in transit. We are a travel agency based in Srinagar, so our plans follow real road, weather and hotel conditions: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg, with the quieter Gurez Valley as a seasonal option.

How to reach Kashmir from Kohima

By air

Kohima does not have a regular passenger airport of its own, so most travellers use Dimapur Airport (DMU), roughly 70 km away. From there a flight to Srinagar usually connects through Guwahati, Kolkata or Delhi.

By train

Trains toward Jammu Tawi and Katra exist, but the distance from Kohima makes rail a trip in itself. Most travellers fly and use a private cab once they land.

By road

Driving is not an option for a normal holiday from here. Fly, and book a private cab for the valley. See our Kashmir cab booking page.

Send us your flight or train details and we plan the Srinagar pick-up around them. A Vande Bharat train connects Katra and Srinagar and was extended to Jammu Tawi in 2026; timetables change, so check IRCTC.

Travelling from Nagaland

Nagaland's main gateway is Dimapur, roughly seventy kilometres from Kohima, so allow time for the road transfer. From there flights usually connect through Guwahati, Kolkata or Delhi.

A suggested route for Kohima travellers

Build in slack: land, rest, and begin sightseeing on day two. Keep the last two nights flexible so a delayed connection never forces you to cut a place from the plan.

When Kohima travellers usually go

Christmas and New Year are major holiday periods in several north-eastern states, and the summer break is another popular window.

For month-by-month conditions, see our honeymoon packages guide and the article on how much a Kashmir trip costs.

Tips for travellers from Kohima

  • Hill-state travellers are used to cool weather and winding roads, so consider quieter valleys such as Gurez or Doodpathri for something different.
  • Book the long first leg early and keep a spare day on both ends.
  • Kohima has no airport of its own, so the road to Dimapur is the first leg of your journey.

Standard, Deluxe, Super Deluxe, and Premium packages are available to suit different budgets (see our budget tours and all Kashmir holiday packages).

How many days are enough for a Kashmir trip?

We generally recommend 5 nights and 6 days for a relaxed first Kashmir trip. This gives you more time to explore the major destinations without rushing between places.

  • 4 nights / 5 days: Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam.

For travellers interested in offbeat places, photography, or a slower holiday, we recommend allowing a week or longer.

What are the extra expenses in a Kashmir tour package?

Extra expenses depend on the selected package and itinerary. Common examples include:

  • Gulmarg Gondola tickets.
  • Pony rides.
  • Local union taxis for particular sightseeing areas.
  • Entrance tickets.
  • Optional activities and adventure experiences.
  • Additional sightseeing outside the agreed route.
  • Personal shopping and expenses.
  • Meals or services not included in the selected plan.

We recommend asking for a written quotation that clearly separates included services from optional expenses.

It is also sensible to keep approximately 10–15% of your planned trip budget aside for unforeseen expenses. This is a budgeting suggestion, not a mandatory fee.

Our standard package inclusions generally cover:

  • Hotel or houseboat accommodation.
  • Breakfast and dinner, according to the selected meal plan.
  • Private cab for the agreed itinerary.
  • Vehicle fuel.
  • Applicable toll taxes.

Some packages may also include a Shikara ride or other specified activities. Inclusions vary by quotation, so we provide the details before confirmation.

Gondola tickets, pony rides, local union taxis, entrance tickets, optional activities, shopping, and sightseeing outside the agreed itinerary may cost extra unless specifically included in writing.

We can also arrange accommodation-only, transport-only (see Kashmir car rental with driver), or customised packages according to your requirements.

Which is the best month to visit Kashmir?

Kashmir is beautiful throughout the year, but the best month depends on the experience you want.

  • March–April: Spring flowers, fresh greenery, and the tulip season, depending on bloom dates (see the Tulip Garden).
  • May–August: Green valleys, mountain scenery, gardens, and outdoor sightseeing (see our summer in Kashmir guide).
  • October–early November: Golden and reddish autumn colours, especially around Srinagar's chinar trees.
  • December–February: Winter scenery and opportunities to experience snow, depending on weather conditions, especially at Gulmarg.

Each season offers a different side of Kashmir. Our recommendation is to select your travel dates according to your preferred experiences, budget, and comfort.
