Amarnath Yatra by Helicopter 2027

A shorter, easier way to reach the holy cave – how the helicopter service works on the Baltal and Pahalgam routes.

Important: The Amarnath Yatra 2027 dates, registration timings and fees have not been announced yet. The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) notifies them each year. Details on this page follow the 2026 yatra (3 July to 28 August 2026, advance registration from 15 April 2026) and will be updated once SASB publishes the 2027 schedule. Always confirm dates and rules on the official portal, jksasb.nic.in.

How the helicopter yatra works

Helicopters shuttle pilgrims between the base and Panjtarni, which is around 5 to 6 kilometres from the holy cave. From the Panjtarni helipad pilgrims walk, or hire a pony or palki, to the shrine, complete the darshan and return to Panjtarni for the flight back. The whole pilgrimage can be done in a day instead of several days of trekking. Helicopters are used on both the Baltal route (from the Neelgrath helipad near Baltal) and the Pahalgam route.

Baltal or Pahalgam helicopter route?

Compare the two on foot in our Baltal route and Pahalgam route guides.

Who should consider the helicopter?

The helicopter suits senior citizens, pilgrims with limited time, families with a medical reason to avoid a long trek, and pilgrims who prefer a shorter journey. Pilgrims still need valid registration and a health certificate; a helicopter ticket does not replace the yatra permit. Read our senior citizens package and registration guide.

What to expect and what can go wrong

  • Seats are limited and sell out fast for peak dates.
  • Flights depend on weather; delays and cancellations are common in bad weather, and we cannot control them.
  • You still need to walk or ride a pony for the last stretch from Panjtarni to the cave.
  • Altitude sickness can affect anyone at 3,888 metres. Rest, hydrate and descend if symptoms get worse.

Included in our helicopter packages

Our helicopter packages include hotel stays and meals as per the itinerary, a private cab for the agreed route, tolls, parking and driver allowances, and helicopter arrangements subject to availability. A complimentary one-hour Shikara ride is part of some packages (see Shikara ride in Dal Lake). Pony or palki charges, personal expenses, travel insurance and optional activities such as Gulmarg Gondola tickets are usually extra. Rates are on request.

Amarnath Yatra by Helicopter 2027 – frequently asked questions

How do I book the Amarnath helicopter?

Helicopter tickets are issued through channels approved by the Shrine Board and require a valid registration. Tell us your allotted date and route and we arrange the rest of the trip around it. We cannot guarantee a ticket before it is confirmed.

Is the helicopter safe in bad weather?

Operators fly only when conditions allow. If weather closes the route, flights are delayed or cancelled. Keep a spare day in your plan.

Have the Amarnath Yatra 2027 dates been announced?

Not yet. The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board announces the dates each year. In 2026 the yatra ran for 57 days from 3 July to 28 August, and advance registration opened on 15 April. For 2027, please wait for the official notification on jksasb.nic.in before booking flights or trains.

Is registration compulsory for the Amarnath Yatra?

Yes. Pilgrims must hold a valid registration and travel on the date and route allotted to them. A Compulsory Health Certificate from an authorised doctor is part of the process. Read our step-by-step guide to Amarnath Yatra registration 2027.

Which route is better – Pahalgam or Baltal?

Baltal is the shorter and steeper route and is the one most often chosen for a quick one-day darshan. The Pahalgam route is the traditional, longer trek via Chandanwari and Sheshnag. Our guides to the Baltal route and the Pahalgam route explain the difference in detail.
