The short version for Kolkata: a long way east to west – most travellers plan one extra night for the journey. This page also serves travellers searching from New Town Kolkata, Bidhannagar (Salt Lake).

Given the longer journey, 6 to 7 nights is a comfortable minimum for most Kolkata travellers. Families with parents or small children often prefer 7 nights for a calmer pace. We are a travel agency based in Srinagar, so our plans follow real road, weather and hotel conditions: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg, with the quieter Gurez Valley as a seasonal option.

How to reach Kashmir from Kolkata

By air

Kolkata to Srinagar is a longer journey than from northern cities. A nonstop flight of roughly three hours appears on some schedules and not on others, so most itineraries involve one stop, often through Delhi. Compare current schedules, and prefer a morning departure so the first day in Srinagar is not wasted.

By train

Trains run from Howrah and Sealdah toward Jammu Tawi and Katra. The rail journey is long, so it suits groups with time to spare. From Jammu or Katra you continue to Srinagar by the Vande Bharat train or by road. Check IRCTC and plan extra days.

By road

Driving from Kolkata is not recommended for holidays; the distance is very large. Fly or take the train, and use a private cab once you are in the valley. See our Kashmir cab booking page.

Send us your flight or train details and we plan the Srinagar pick-up around them. A Vande Bharat train connects Katra and Srinagar and was extended to Jammu Tawi in 2026; timetables change, so check IRCTC.

Travelling from West Bengal

Kolkata is the gateway for most of West Bengal, with flights connecting through Delhi or one-stop options. Durga Puja is a major travel period, so book early for those weeks.

A suggested route for Kolkata travellers

After a long journey from Kolkata, treat day one as a rest day: check in, take a short walk by Dal Lake and sleep early. From day two the route runs Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, with Sonmarg as a day trip if the season allows. A seventh night gives families a slow day in Pahalgam before the trip home.

When Kolkata travellers usually go

Many Kolkata families build their Kashmir trip around the Durga Puja holidays in autumn, when the valley has crisp air and the first chinar colours, and around winter for snow or the summer vacation. Puja weeks book out early, so reserve hotels well ahead.

For month-by-month conditions, see our honeymoon packages guide and the article on how much a Kashmir trip costs.

Tips for travellers from Kolkata

  • Book Puja-week trips as early as you can; hotels and flights fill first.
  • Prefer a morning departure so a connection does not push your arrival to midnight.
  • Pack warm layers – the weather difference from Kolkata is large.

Standard, Deluxe, Super Deluxe, and Premium packages are available to suit different budgets (see our budget tours and all Kashmir holiday packages).

For example, travellers looking for a budget-friendly holiday may choose standard accommodation, while honeymoon couples may prefer premium hotels or a luxury houseboat on Nigeen Lake.

At Acme Tour & Travels, we recommend comparing the complete package inclusions rather than choosing an option based on price alone. Our guide on how much a Kashmir trip will cost explains the cost breakdown in detail.

How many days are enough for a Kashmir trip?

We generally recommend 5 nights and 6 days for a relaxed first Kashmir trip. This gives you more time to explore the major destinations without rushing between places.

Suggested durations include:

  • 3 nights / 4 days: Srinagar, Dal Lake, Mughal Gardens, and a Gulmarg excursion.
  • 4 nights / 5 days: Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam.
  • 5 nights / 6 days: Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam with a more relaxed pace and overnight stays in different destinations.
  • 6 nights / 7 days or longer: More time for Sonamarg, Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, or other destinations, subject to season and accessibility.

For travellers interested in offbeat places, photography, or a slower holiday, we recommend allowing a week or longer.

Which is the best month to visit Kashmir?

Kashmir is beautiful throughout the year, but the best month depends on the experience you want.

  • March–April: Spring flowers, fresh greenery, and the tulip season, depending on bloom dates (see the Tulip Garden).
  • May–August: Green valleys, mountain scenery, gardens, and outdoor sightseeing (see our summer in Kashmir guide).
  • October–early November: Golden and reddish autumn colours, especially around Srinagar's chinar trees.
  • December–February: Winter scenery and opportunities to experience snow, depending on weather conditions, especially at Gulmarg.

Each season offers a different side of Kashmir. Our recommendation is to select your travel dates according to your preferred experiences, budget, and comfort.

Should I book my Kashmir package in advance or after arriving?

We recommend booking in advance, particularly during summer holidays, the tulip season, New Year, and other busy travel periods.

Advance planning gives you a better opportunity to compare accommodation, confirm suitable rooms and vehicles, and organise your preferred itinerary. Availability and rates can change as demand increases.

We have helped travellers who arrived in Kashmir without confirmed hotel and cab arrangements and then struggled to find suitable options at reasonable prices.

For this reason, we recommend confirming your accommodation and transport before departure rather than relying entirely on last-minute arrangements. You can contact our Srinagar team to start planning.
