How to reach Kashmir from Shimla

By air

The local option is Shimla Airport (SLV), which has limited flights; Chandigarh's IXC is the usual gateway. Flights are fewer than at the big metros, so most itineraries route through Delhi on the way to Srinagar.

By train

You can take a train toward Jammu Tawi or Katra and continue to Srinagar by Vande Bharat or cab. It is a shorter rail journey than from most cities, but check IRCTC and add a day if you go by rail.

By road

Driving is possible but it is a long haul, and the Jammu–Srinagar highway can be affected by weather. Most travellers prefer to fly or take the train and use a cab in the valley. See our Kashmir cab booking page.

Send us your flight or train details and we plan the Srinagar pick-up around them. A Vande Bharat train connects Katra and Srinagar and was extended to Jammu Tawi in 2026; timetables change, so check IRCTC.

Travelling from Himachal Pradesh

Himachal's hill towns are used to cool weather and winding roads, so the journey north feels familiar. Many travellers look beyond the main tourist spots and ask about quieter valleys such as Gurez and Doodpathri.

A suggested route for Shimla travellers

Because the journey is short, you can land in Srinagar by late morning and still enjoy Dal Lake the same afternoon. Spend the next days on Srinagar's gardens, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, and keep the last morning free before heading to the airport or station.

When Shimla travellers usually go

Travellers from Himachal often go in the cooler off-season months, when hotels and routes are quieter.

For month-by-month conditions, see our honeymoon packages guide and the article on how much a Kashmir trip costs.

Tips for travellers from Shimla

  • Hill-state travellers are used to cool weather and winding roads, so consider quieter valleys such as Gurez or Doodpathri for something different.
  • Choose a morning flight or train so the first afternoon is free for Dal Lake.
  • Shimla is a hill-station home base, so your journey usually starts with a road transfer down to Chandigarh.

Before you book

Every package page lists its inclusions and exclusions. Read our cancellation and refund policy and the Kashmir travel FAQs, and check current travel advisories before you book.

The final price depends on the number of days, number of travellers, travel season, hotel category, transportation, meal plan, and destinations included in your itinerary. Standard, Deluxe, Super Deluxe, and Premium packages are available to suit different budgets (see our budget tours and all Kashmir holiday packages).

For example, travellers looking for a budget-friendly holiday may choose standard accommodation, while honeymoon couples may prefer premium hotels or a luxury houseboat on Nigeen Lake.

At Acme Tour & Travels, we recommend comparing the complete package inclusions rather than choosing an option based on price alone. Our guide on how much a Kashmir trip will cost explains the cost breakdown in detail.

How many days are enough for a Kashmir trip?

We generally recommend 5 nights and 6 days for a relaxed first Kashmir trip. This gives you more time to explore the major destinations without rushing between places.

Suggested durations include:

  • 3 nights / 4 days: Srinagar, Dal Lake, Mughal Gardens, and a Gulmarg excursion.
  • 4 nights / 5 days: Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam.
  • 5 nights / 6 days: Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam with a more relaxed pace and overnight stays in different destinations.
  • 6 nights / 7 days or longer: More time for Sonamarg, Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, or other destinations, subject to season and accessibility.

For travellers interested in offbeat places, photography, or a slower holiday, we recommend allowing a week or longer.

Should I book my Kashmir package in advance or after arriving?

We recommend booking in advance, particularly during summer holidays, the tulip season, New Year, and other busy travel periods.

Advance planning gives you a better opportunity to compare accommodation, confirm suitable rooms and vehicles, and organise your preferred itinerary. Availability and rates can change as demand increases.

We have helped travellers who arrived in Kashmir without confirmed hotel and cab arrangements and then struggled to find suitable options at reasonable prices.

For this reason, we recommend confirming your accommodation and transport before departure rather than relying entirely on last-minute arrangements. You can contact our Srinagar team to start planning.

What are the extra expenses in a Kashmir tour package?

Extra expenses depend on the selected package and itinerary. Common examples include:

  • Gulmarg Gondola tickets.
  • Pony rides.
  • Local union taxis for particular sightseeing areas.
  • Entrance tickets.
  • Optional activities and adventure experiences.
  • Additional sightseeing outside the agreed route.
  • Personal shopping and expenses.
  • Meals or services not included in the selected plan.

We recommend asking for a written quotation that clearly separates included services from optional expenses.

It is also sensible to keep approximately 10–15% of your planned trip budget aside for unforeseen expenses. This is a budgeting suggestion, not a mandatory fee.

Which is the best month to visit Kashmir?

Kashmir is beautiful throughout the year, but the best month depends on the experience you want.

  • March–April: Spring flowers, fresh greenery, and the tulip season, depending on bloom dates (see the Tulip Garden).
  • May–August: Green valleys, mountain scenery, gardens, and outdoor sightseeing (see our summer in Kashmir guide).
  • October–early November: Golden and reddish autumn colours, especially around Srinagar's chinar trees.
  • December–February: Winter scenery and opportunities to experience snow, depending on weather conditions, especially at Gulmarg.

Each season offers a different side of Kashmir. Our recommendation is to select your travel dates according to your preferred experiences, budget, and comfort.
