One of Srinagar's biggest religious destinations is the Shankarcharya Temple, which is devoted to Lord Shiva. It bears the name of Shankarcharya, a famous philosopher who once travelled to Kashmir. The Hindu temple is ideally situated so that visitors and worshipers can get a wide-angle view of Srinagar City.

The 243-step staircase leading to the temple, also known as Jyeshteshwara Temple, is used by the many Hindu pilgrims who come during the Amarnath Yatra season.

Architecture of Shankarcharya Temple

The square Shankaracharya Temple is supported by an octagonal base that is 20 feet tall. There is a circular, small, and dark chamber inside the shrine. Four octagonal pillars that surround a basin with the Shivalinga encircled by a snake support the ceiling.

The ideal time to visit Shankaracharya is from May to September. Unlike the chilly winters when it snows in Srinagar, the weather is nice to visit.

Things to Know Before Visiting Shankarcharya Temple

Inside the temple, phones and cameras are not permitted. So, before going, either leave them in your car or cab, or in your hotel. Although the temple is open until 8:00 p.m., cars are only permitted to enter the parking lot until 5:00 p.m. Wear comfortable shoes, and bring drink, as there are 243 steps to climb to get to Shankaracharya Temple.
